"The Origami Car" is the 9th episode of Season 3 of Infinity Train and the 29th episode overall. It airs on August 27, 2020.
Synopsis[]
The gang is finally ready to meet The Apex again, but keeping secrets has consequences.
Plot[]
The next morning, Grace wakes up and tentatively joins Simon, Hazel, and Amelia for breakfast. Still maintaining the facade that she did not know Hazel was a denizen, she suggests to Amelia that Hazel remain with the Apex as a member. However, Hazel refuses, deciding that she no longer feels safe with both Simon and Grace, and firmly agrees to go with Amelia. The group separate at the car's divide, with Hazel and Amelia remaining as the pulse hits the car, sending them to another part of the train, leaving a disinterested Simon and a sobbing Grace behind.
In the Origami Car, Grace continues to cry over losing Hazel while Simon expresses glee that things are back to normal, crushing the paper denizens as he goes along. Grace finally lashes out at him for not caring about Hazel, only for Simon to raise the device the Cat gave him and trapping Grace in her memory tape. Grace finds herself in her childhood, reliving her humiliating dance recital where her parents never showed up, and arriving at the ice cream parlor to find she was not invited to join the other dancers. As revenge, she manipulated them by revealing embarrassing gossip. She also witnesses memories of her parents neglecting her and handing her off to various babysitters. This culminated in her getting caught for shoplifting at a store as a way to be noticed by her parents, only for them to deny she was even capable of stealing. Shortly after this, the Infinity Train arrived and she boarded it. Simon, who is also in the tape, tells Grace that the Train knew she was wasted in the real world and would be respected on the train.
Grace then witnesses her memory of the Pumpkin Car where she was nearly attacked by the Steward, only to be saved by the Conductor/Amelia, whom she remembers as a black mass. Realizing this memory is incorrect, Grace remembers the Conductor's true smaller robotic form: however, Simon rejects this memory as it doesn't fit the perfect image of the Conductor he was led to believe, and accuses Grace of using Amelia's "lies" to trick him. They then witness the memory of Grace saving Simon from a Gohm after the Cat accidentally left him behind. After introducing themselves to each other, Simon asked why Grace had a higher number than him: Grace came up with the lie that it was because she was really good at the train. The pair grew up together on the train while spreading their beliefs about the train to other children they encountered. Simon then shows Grace the memory of her telling Hazel they will hide her true identity from him, and refuses to listen as she tries to explain herself. He (now with his number reaching his neck) tells her she betrayed the Apex and him before leaving her trapped in the memory tape and going back to the Mall Car without her.

Trivia[]
- End tag: Against a background of static, the hands of Hazel and Amelia are now gone, Simon's number rises and Grace's still-gloved hand is gradually covered in static. The hands are in the same exact positions as they were in "The Musical Car."
- The music that plays when Young Grace boards the Infinity Train is sampled from "Running Away," the theme song to Book One.
- Kirby Howell-Baptiste, who puts on an American accent to voice Grace, uses her natural English accent to voice Grace's mother.
- The memory of Grace and Hazel keeping their secret from Simon is drastically different than the scene from "The Campfire Car".
Storyline analysis[]
- Continuing on from the previous episodes, Grace's attempt to preserve her friendships with Simon and Hazel has directly caused both friendships to completely break down.
Continuity[]
- Simon smirks and glances at Grace when Amelia states Hazel is worth studying and will be taken with her, this relates to Simon's beliefs that nulls aren't people and his statement in "The Hey Ho Whoa Car" that they should leave Hazel with Amelia.
- The memory of Grace's dance recital was previously relayed to Hazel in "The Debutante Ball Car."
- As previously related in "The Mall Car" and "The Musical Car," young Simon is shown wearing socks with sandals (although they are white, not black, as claimed by Grace in "The Mall Car").
- Simon and Grace are shown playing Chubby Bunny in a flashback. This incident was previously referenced in "The Jungle Car."
- The moment of Simon's feelings towards the scene the Cat left him was previously referenced in "Le Chat Chalet Car" and "The Canyon of the Golden Winged Snakes Car."
- The memory of Grace meeting Amelia and the Steward in the Pumpkin Car for the first time was previously mentioned in "The Hey Ho Whoa Car".
Deleted Scenes[]
- Early artwork suggests that Simon's interpretation of Amelia as the Conductor looks more like a devil than a shadow.
- As originally revealed by Ryann Shannon, the montage of Grace's memories originally included a scene where Grace and Simon shared an "awkward middle school...kiss," which ended with Grace laughing in Simon's face and Simon "pretending it did not just blow his mind." It is not clear if the scene was cut for time or story reasons.[1]
- Other cutscenes revealed in the storyboards include: young Grace shaking hands with young Simon to mark their partnership, present Simon watching the aforementioned flashback and accusing Grace of forgetting, and young Grace first putting the mark of the Apex on young Simon.[2]
Errors[]
- In the scene when Amelia warns Grace and Simon that the car is about to be ejected, Hazel's wave symbol is missing. This was previously the case with Simon in "The Mall Car" and "The Hey Ho Whoa Car".
