Overview

"The Debutante Ball Car" is the 3rd episode of Season 3 of Infinity Train and the 23rd episode overall. It aired on August 13, 2020.

Synopsis[]

The gang's uneasy alliance is tested by a challenge in their first car together: dancing in a high-stakes octopus debutante ball!

Plot[]

The gang travels through an Ocean Car, where Grace and Simon watch uneasily as Hazel plays with Tuba, whom they plot to eventually get rid of. They once again make a plea to Hazel to join the Apex, claiming the train was taken over by "an evil robot" named One-One instead of the "real" conductor, a man with a big black helmet that had a red wave on it with the highest number on the train. They claim One-One is trying to get rid of all the humans on the train and that kids have been disappearing since he took over (unaware this is the intended purpose of the train). Grace, pointing out she has the highest number, emphasizes that she makes sure everyone's number stays high, and tells Hazel she can join if she proves she is very special and brave.

While traveling between cars, Tuba and Hazel sing a song that Tuba used to sing to her kids, though Tuba admits she cannot go back to them for unstated reasons. They arrive in the Debutante Ball Car, which appears to be a massive ballroom populated by fancy octopus people. The sentient Chandelier criticizes their appearance, and explains they can only exit the car once they've "entered society." He transforms into his more human like form and escorts them to the Cotillion Room, where they are trapped until they learn the special waltz. Simon looks for a way out of the car through the vents, while Grace stays with Hazel to learn the dance. While learning the ballroom dance using the steps on the floor, Grace learns more about Hazel, who claims to have learned how to dance from classes, but expresses confusion and fear at Grace's inquiries about her parents. Choosing a different approach, Grace explains she took dance lessons as a child, while admitting she never took classes with other kids because her parents told her she needed to learn solo – one time the instructor put her in a group recital, but her parents did not attend and the other girls in the class did not know her so she was not invited out for ice cream afterwards. Simon returns, reporting there is only a black void outside the building. Grace suggests they just learn the dance, so she and Simon partner up.

The group learns the dance and is given their debut at the ballroom, where they receive applause and compliments from the Octopus People. The door is opened for them, and Grace compliments Hazel for her bravery, formally inducting her into the Apex by drawing a red wave on her face. Hazel requests Tuba receive one as well, but is turned down by Simon and backed by Grace's lack of response.

After they exit the car, Simon asks Hazel to teach him Tuba's song. As Hazel starts to teach Simon the lyrics, Grace shares a suspicious glance with Tuba and fails to notice her number starting to go down.

Trivia[]

  • End tag: Simon, Grace, Hazel, and Tuba's hands, against a background of the floor of the Debutante Ball Car. Hazel's hand continues to wave playfully.

Continuity[]

  • Grace compares Hazel's friendship with Tuba to Simon's friendship with another denizen when he first arrived on the train.
  • Grace's belief that Amelia is the real conductor, and thus the whole reason she created the Apex, is based on Amelia as the conductor apparently saving her life in the past.
  • Hazel does not appear to have any knowledge of her parents, and in her introduction to the ball she is named as "Hazel Last Name Unknown."
