Lucy is a child living in the Mall Car and a former member of the Apex.

Appearance[]

Lucy is a young girl with a brown bob cut. She wears a light gray sweater with a red stripe across the chest. She wears blue jean shorts and brown shoes. Lucy is easily identifiable by her eyepatch, which she wears after an accident with her harpoon pack.

Personality[]

Lucy seems to idolize the Apex's leaders Grace and Simon with both characters having some fondness for Lucy as well.

Despite her admiration for Grace and Simon, she sometimes has her doubts about their talk about Denizens being non-sentient and untrustworthy. She also hated seeing conflict between her role models and it was clear she was hoping the two would reconcile even when Simon declared Grace, a void in The New Apex.

History[]

Book Two - Cracked Reflection[]

"The Mall Car"[]

Lucy is first alluded to when Grace warns Jesse not to point his harpoon pack at his face, claiming he does not want to end up like Lucy.

She can briefly be seen from the back in the background in the shot of the Apex's skatepark.

Book Three - Cult of the Conductor[]

"The Musical Car"[]

Lucy makes her first appearance during the raid of the Musical Car where she pulls a Stage Light Person's head off its stand body and takes him as a prisoner.

At the mall, she presents Grace and Simon with one of the Stage Light People as a possible gift. Grace turns the gift down and scoffs at Lucy calling it a person, claiming she should just wheel it, however Lucy expresses interest in keeping the light person. After Grace reminds Lucy of the Apex's position on denizens being "Nulls," Simon steps in and asks to keep the Stage Light Person to light up the diorama in his room representing a battle scene in his novel. Lucy leaves to install the light, though she is left conflicted when he pleads that he is not a toy.

She later spreads jam over a house wall in the Unfinished Car.

"The New Apex"[]

Lucy is the first of the Apex children Grace encounters on her return to the Mall Car. She confronts Grace with a broom while calling her a "Void," although she shows obvious discomfort at treating her former leader this way. Notably, she avoids sounding the alarm at first, and gives Grace a worried look when another member of the Apex reports Grace's presence to Simon.

She later witnesses Simon condemning Grace to be wheeled, but watches in horror when the two start to fight. When Simon is pounced by a Ghom, Lucy is one of the members to cry out his name in terror and worry. After he is killed by the Ghom and Grace breaks down in tears over his ashes, a similarly grieving Lucy puts her hand on her shoulder for comfort as they mourn together.

Later when Grace resolves to dissolve the Apex now that they know the truth about their numbers, Lucy questions what it will be called instead. Grace responds she does not know but they will all find out together.
