Sometimes numbers are part of the problem, not the solution, y'know?

—Kez to Min-Gi, "The Iceberg Car"

Kez is the deuteragonist and the bell companion to Ryan Akagi and Min-Gi Park throughout their journey in Book 4.

Appearance[]

Kez is a flying sentient grey concierge bell who leaves blue pixie dust behind. Her mouth forms between the sounding shell and the base.

Personality[]

Kez is kind and helpful, but also has a tendency to be dismissive about the problems she creates, most notably those with other denizens of the train. Despite this, however, she has everyone's best interests at heart, as noted with her interactions with Jeremy, when she helps him sort out his issues and gets him off the train. She also seemingly abandons Ryan and Min-Gi in "The Old West Car", only to return and save them before they are executed, further cementing her tendency to help people in whatever strange manner she deems fit.

Powers and Abilities[]

Besides the power of flight, Kez can make hand gestures with her pixie dust, store items in her mouth, and can be rung like any concierge bell.

Book Four - Duet[]

The Iceberg Car[]

She greets Ryan and Min-Gi when they wake up and explains the train to them, without mentioning the train. After showing them the thermostat she messed with, the three are attacked by three beings in parkas. Eventually they set it back to normal, and Ryan and Min-Gi leave as Kez sets the thermostat to perpetually oscillate between eras to prevent the Parka Denizens from pursuing them. She approaches Ryan and Min-Gi outside of the car, but the boys are perplexed by the fact they are still on the train. She invites Ryan and Min-Gi to her home, claiming there shouldn't be any more people out to get them. However, in the next car they are confronted by insect cowboys.

The Old West Car[]

After she temporarily disorients them, she, Ryan, and Min-Gi run into town and look for a hiding place in the Saloon. The bartender hides them on account of the boys' initial numbers being the same, but quickly turns them in for the reward money. When they are locked in a cell, she is placed in a cage in the corner. She breaks herself out, leaving Ryan and Min-Gi behind. Unbeknownst to them, she asks The Cat to help her with a distraction as they are brought to trial. Her plan works and she, Ryan, and Min-Gi escape from their execution while the town is distracted with the concierge bell from the Saloon.

The Pig Baby Car[]

After finding themselves in a gravity defying kitchen, she dons a chef’s hat and tells Ryan and Min-Gi to call her “Lorraine”. She keeps the act when they are discovered by Pig Baby and Cow Creamer and ordered the make a treat for Pig Baby. After numerous failed attempts, she reveals that she started a grease fire that destroyed all but one cookbook. They manage to appease Pig Baby but Cow Creamer refuses to let them go. After noticing the door in Pig Baby's mouth, Ryan pulls off the chef's hat off of Kez and Pig Baby starts to cry. They jump into his mouth and exit the car.

The Astro Queue Car[]

After Ryan completes an infant puzzle, they end up in a car that her friends inhabit. After the bouncer doesn’t let them in, she helps Ryan in his failed attempts to get in and helps Min-Gi pull him up after Ryan nearly falls to his death. She helps them get in, but glitches with the rest of the car shortly after entering.

The Party Car[]

Kez unfreezes and is unfazed by the ordeal. She introduces Ryan and Min-Gi to her friends and accidentally brings them to the bathroom upon being asked to take them to the green room. After Ryan goes on stage without Min-Gi, the crowd starts to boo and Ryan tries to leave, but she tells him the exit will only open if the party is a success. After apologizing to her friends, they reveal they knew she would fail as she finds Min-Gi and Ryan composing a new song and sits on the former's shoulder.

The Art Gallery Car[]

After entering an Art Gallery Car, Ryan and Min-Gi start chatting it up as if they were still in high school. However the further into the car they go, the colder they get and they start to argue with each other. They split up as she tries to act as a mediator between the two before a larger argument breaks out, only for her screams to interrupt them. After looking at a mobile from a certain angle, Ryan realizes it is the exit and he and Kez get out but Min-Gi doesn’t see them. She and Ryan try and fail to get back in the car as a creature made of arms starts to lean over Min-Gi. When Ryan says he is not leaving his friend, his number reaches zero and an exit appears. He struggles with the thought of going home and leaving Min, but also wants to leave the train. Soon after his number goes back up to 115 and the exit closes. Min-Gi eventually finds the exit and gets out. While Ryan is happy, Min-Gi starts to cry and accuses Ryan of abandoning him.

The Mega Maze Car[]

As Min-Gi berates Ryan for abandoning him, Ryan says he chose to stay but doesn’t elaborate. Kez announces that the next car is her home and they enter to find a castle surrounded by a maze. Kez guides them as they head to the castle. However as they walk, the Parka Denizens, Judge Morpho, Cow Creamer, Nigel the bouncer, and Pig Baby, aged into a toddler, enter the car with the intent to hunt them down. They evade their pursuers and make it into the castle. Ryan and Min-Gi watch as Kez is chased by Judge Morpho and urge her to come inside when the drawbridge starts to close. Kez makes it in thanks to Pig Baby eating the Judge. Once inside, she introduces Ryan and Min-Gi to her roommate Morgan, and the castle starts to talk.

The Castle Car[]

As Morgan starts yelling at her for bringing more passengers to her, she accuses Kez of trying to replace Jeremy Bradford, a passenger who took care of Morgan. Min-Gi and Ryan accuse Kez of lying to them as Morgan drags them to Jeremy's room and starts to pelt Min-Gi and Ryan with hats and mini quiches. As Min-Gi and Ryan are constricted by clothes. She manages to get Morgan to calm down. As Kez apologizes for Morgan's behavior, Ryan berates her for not realizing when she makes mistakes and leaving without fixing them. Min-Gi confirms this by saying never apologizes and Ryan asks her to leave.

After reading through Jeremy's journal, Ryan and Min-Gi learn that Jeremy spent five years with Morgan and Kez before the entries stop. After learning from the last entry he was going to have breakfast with Kez, they sneak out to find her when Morgan is asleep. She tells them how the day Jeremy left, she and him were talking about the survivors guilt he had from the car crash that killed his mother and sister. She tried to help him and eventually succeeded when his number reached zero. She explains how she called for Morgan to come, but she arrived just as Jeremy went through the exit. Min-Gi says she helped him and Ryan reluctantly agrees. However, the car starts to glitch again and a steward appears, telling the passengers the train is theirs and removing their boots before leaving and exploding in the sky. Their numbers start to move but stay at 202. Ryan starts to laugh hysterically before storming off, ignoring Min-Gi's pleas to help.

The Train to Nowhere[]

Her and Min-Gi bring Ryan food, as he has not touched the other food they brought him after he locked himself in a room a few days ago. After Ryan laments over the possibility of staying on the train forever, Min-Gi says they will get their exits eventually and Ryan reveals he got his outside of the art gallery and considered taking it. Later, they manage to get Ryan out of the room and they make up before having a jam session. After that, Min-Gi gets his exit but refuses to leave until Ryan gets his.

As Morgan urges them to leave, she lets the angry denizens in and Ryan and Min-Gi urge Kez to apologize, which she does. They start to accept her apology, but Judge Morpho refuses and attacks them, only for Ryan and Morgan to swat her away. As they repair the damage, Ryan gets his exit and the two say goodbye to her before leaving.

Trivia[]

  • Kez's name can be derived from the KEZ radio station, which plays music from the eighties and nineties, the former being when the book she appears in takes place.
  • Owen Dennis joked in the Book 4 Reddit AMA that people born on the train are "recycled into the system" and their blood is used to fill Kez.[1]
