Aloysius III is the emperor and unifier of the hard and soft-shelled turtles. He is a turtle himself, although he seems to be the only turtle walking on all four legs. He has guards that announce his presence when introducing him and is greeted by the extending of his neck.
Appearance[]
Unlike the other turtles, Aloysius walks on four legs. He has a dark green shell and light grey skin. He also wears a silver and red crown on his head indicating his status, which he keeps balanced using bobby pins. He also wears a pair of glasses, which somehow manage to stay balanced on his nose despite his lack of ears.
Personality[]
Befitting his status as ruler, Aloysius is polite and friendly, offering his assistance to Tulip and her group and quickly befriending Atticus. He is proud of his kingdom and its achievements, including its postal service and its jam-based transportation/food system. He also enjoys the occasional leaf of romaine lettuce, which his wife supposedly disapproves.
History[]
Aloysius, along with his car, is the result of Amelia's attempts to create a car containing her old life with her partner Alrick. Although he shares a voice and glasses with Alrick, the resemblance stops there: due to her memories of a handkerchief with turtles on it, all of the denizens in the car, including Aloysius, came out as turtles.
Aloysius' exact history is unclear, but he claims to be the unifier of the hard and soft-shelled turtles, suggesting he mitigated some conflict prior to the events of the series.
Book One - The Perennial Child[]
"The Unfinished Car"[]
Aloysius and his entourage greet Tulip, Atticus, and One-One upon their arrival in the car. They escort the group through the car while he and Atticus bond over their shared status as royalty. Despite Tulip's urgency to leave, they end up staying a little longer so Aloysius can give Atticus an in-depth tour of the car. Aloysius shows off the architecture, food, and postal service (all unique to their kingdom due to the car's unfinished state). The tour is interrupted by One-One's destructive attempts to "fix" the car, which threatens Aloysius and the other turtles' lives. Tulip manages to talk One-One down, but the car is left in disarray. Atticus offers the services of the Corginian Response Team, which Aloysius graciously accepts and the group parts on good terms.
Book Three - Cult of the Conductor[]
"The Musical Car"[]
Aloysius himself does not make an appearance (possibly performing royal duties), but his name is invoked when the Apex attacks the car and its inhabitants, along with the Corginian Response Team.
Trivia[]
- Aloysius shares a voice actor, Matthew Rhys, with Alrick. This is intentionally related to the fact that his car was built by Amelia (as revealed in "The Engine"): according to Owen Dennis, "Amelia was SO close to recreating Alrick that she got the voice the same."[1]
